NSW: Fuel spillage at Mascot airport

SYDNEY, Dec 17 AAP - Up to 100,000 litres of aviation fuel had spilled from tanks into
overflow bays at Sydney airport this afternoon, a fire brigades spokesman said.

Some of the gasoline also was thought to have escaped into a nearby canal which feeds into
the Cooks River.

Emergency crews had been called to the scene -- the Qantas Jet Base at Mascot -- around
1pm, the spokesman said.

Within an hour the spillage had been contained to the overflow bays, he said.

Airport fire authorities, five New South Wales Fire Brigades crews and specialist HazMat
units were mopping up the fuel.

The Environmental Protection Authority had also been alerted, but it was not certain how
the avgas escaped.
